By now, everyone knows that the shattering impact of COVID-19 has brought on a business crisis without precedent in recent memory.
The pandemic will fundamentally reshape how we do business from now on. Even if lockdowns end soon and the virus is staunchly suppressed never to return, its effect will linger.
So when business leaders share with me how their business strategies will likely change in the post-virus period, I have to point out to them that this might not be enough. Some of their key strategic priorities will have to be modified in a radical way. (more…)

When people think of succession planning, they tend to think of executive replacement. But what about all the other areas of the company? Do you have the next generation ready to fill roles at all levels of your company? Have you created a development plan for people to move up or across the organization? Or do you often hire outside of the company for roles because you think no one internal is good enough?
The only way to reduce the effect of lost talent or under-performing employees is with a multilevel succession roadmap. This kind of leadership commitment to developing and mentoring the next generation is a vital component of a company that believes its most important asset is its people. Historically, leadership development was largely focused on participants’ involvement in training programs or reading a book. This was all based upon one completely invalid assumption—if they understand, they will do. Wrong!
Everyone who buys diet books makes the same assumption as everyone who goes to training programs or reads a book: If I understand how to go on a diet, I will do it. Wrong again!
As the sales of diet books have skyrocketed, readers have become more and more obese! You don’t lose weight by reading diet books. You lose weight by actually going on a diet—and sticking with it. (more…)
